GLAUCOMA

WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?

Glaucoma is a condition where the optic nerve is very gradually damaged by excess pressure in the eye. Most people are unaware they have glaucoma, and it is important to have regular eye checks for this before vision loss occurs.

TREATMENTS FOR GLAUCOMA

The treatment of glaucoma depends on several factors, but it is important to understand that treatment does not reverse damage that has occurred, but rather it slows or prevents further damage from occurring.

The main treatment involves lowering the pressure in the eye, and eye drops or laser are generally used as the initial treatment. At the Taranaki Eye Centre, we have Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) available which can offer convenient, drop-free treatment for a number of years.

There are also several surgical treatments for glaucoma. Your surgeon can discuss these if required.
